The Dental Management of Bulimia
The effects on the teeth
of bulimia - one of the most common eating disorders - can be severe.
Strong stomach acids chemically dissolve the teeth, leaving them disfigured
and open to bacterial contamination. Exposed dental pulps
("nerves") eventually lead to root canal infection
and tooth loss. The deterioration of the teeth can impact general
health.
Sometimes
the dental effects of bulimia are hidden. More often there is a visible
shortening and discoloration of the upper front teeth. Furthermore,
damaged front teeth often result in a reluctance to smile, weakening
one's self-esteem. Thanks to the new durable and highly cosmetic all
ceramic restorations, it is now possible using enamel and dentin bonding
to restore damaged teeth to ideal form and function. Boston dentist
Peter Katz has been treating patients with a history of bulimia since
1989. Utilizing the skills he has developed in clinical practice since
1978, Dr. Katz is able to restore beautiful, healthy smiles for these
patients.
